Chris has over 15 years experience working both in Canada and abroad in the areas of international and community development, refugee protection, and education. From working with non-profit organizations, to sitting on the board of local 2SLGBTQI+ organizations, to teaching kindergarten up to university level students – Chris is motivated by a desire for social justice. Most recently, as part of a PhD program in Education, Chris was researching the language learning experiences of 2SLGBTQI+ newcomers in Canadian ESL classrooms. He brings this same passion for understanding issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion to his work with the Supplier Diversity Program.
As Co-Founder and CEO of CGLCC, Darrell Schuurman has been committed to CGLCC’s mission since 2003. He is a Former Managing Partner at DNA Marketing Group and has a background in business, sales and marketing. He is the Co-Founder of Travel Gay Canada.
Vanessa, originally from a Nigerian-Kenyan background, made Montreal her home just six months ago. Prior to settling in Montreal, she resided in Kenya and the Netherlands. Her professional background is rooted in NGOs dedicated to enhancing the lived experiences of marginalized groups. Her expertise lies in communications, stakeholder engagement, and event planning.
Vanessa’s motivation for joining CGLCC stems from her commitment to amplifying the voices and improving the experiences of historically marginalized communities. With a foundation in Political Science and European Studies, her academic pursuits often centered on researching the experiences of Black/Afro minority groups. She identifies as a Black/African woman with an unseen disability.
In her leisure time, Vanessa finds joy in traveling, spending time with her favorite kitty Mango, and spending quality time with her loved ones.

Kailey Gilchrist brings a dynamic perspective to our team, with over 10 years of experience in business development and as a Diverse Supplier with her company, NONA Vegan. Leading a successful CPG food business has taught her versatility and resilience in entrepreneurship. Actively engaged with CGLCC for the past 5 years, she has attended Global Trade Missions, won pitch competitions, obtained Rainbow Registered status, and participated in the Out for Business Youth Program.
Now in the role of Manager of Corporate Business Development, Kailey holds a genuine commitment to fostering partnerships with organizations and supporting suppliers in their journeys. Having completed Tuck Executive Education programs at Dartmouth for Starting and Growing a Successful Diverse Business, she brings both practical experience and education to her role. Additionally, holding a degree in Theatre Studies from the University of Guelph, Kailey’s creative background may just be her ‘secret sauce’ in the world of business.
Connie Stacey is the founder and owner of Grengine Inc, a battery manufacturer located in Edmonton, Alberta. Connie holds a BA from the University of Alberta as well as a diploma in computer programming, and brings 20 years of experience from the IT sector to her work at Grengine. She founded Grengine in 2014 with a desire to replace diesel generators with a clean energy alternative which centers on her patented modular battery technology. Grengine proudly manufactures its batteries in Edmonton and has a strong focus on EDI and building a sustainable supply chain.
Connie is deeply involved in the Edmonton community, sitting on the steering committee of NAIT’s Centre of Grid Innovation, NorQuest College’s Workforce Advisory Committee, Innovate Edmonton’s Innovation Growth Council, and Edmonton Global’s Forward/Slash steering committee for regional economic growth. Connie has been recognized by the Government of Canada and Government of Alberta as an industry leader requesting her attendance in a variety of events and consultations, including participation in the 15 person business delegation which accompanied Prime Minister Trudeau to the 2023 North American Leadership Summit in Mexico City. She has also won numerous leadership and business awards, including; the Trail Blazer award from Edify magazine (2023); Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee Medal (2022); named by the Globe and Mail as one of Canada’s top 50 Changemakers (2021); named Alberta Women Entrepreneur of the year by the Alberta Chamber of commerce (2021); won the national pitch competition ‘Pitch for the Purse’ (2020); Global Woman of Vision (2020); and named to the World Changing Women list by Conscious Media (2020). Additionally, Connie has led Grengine to many product and innovation awards including; a US Department of Defence Innovation Award (2018); CGLCC Business of the Year Award (2019); CANIEs National Product Innovation Award (2020); and won the International Mining Innovation Institute’s (iMii) innovation challenge (2022).
Nancy Shadlock MA (she/her) is a dedicated queer empowerment architect. With two decades of leadership experience and a powerful personal journey from conversion therapy survivor to empowerment coach, Nancy has transformed thousands of lives through her innovative workshops, 1:1 coaching and popular podcast — The Coming Out Chronicles. Her unique approach has helped millionaires, C-suite executives and under employed folks find authentic fulfillment in work and life. Nancy’s mission is to guide 1 million LGBTQ+ individuals to embrace their whole selves, reawaken their passion, and thrive unapologetically in every aspect of their lives. Featured across major media outlets, she’s known for creating profound breakthroughs that bridge professional success with personal authenticity.
Alex Gysen (he/they) works for TD Bank as the Regional Manager, 2SLGBTQ+ Business Development in the Prairies. Alex’s primary role is to serve as a trusted liaison between TD and the 2SLGBTQ+ community. In addition to his deep understanding of the community itself, he relies on his ability to develop strong relationships with its members in order to fully discover their financial needs and goals. As part of this, they work hard to stay engaged with the community at large on a regular basis, by supporting and volunteering with local grass roots organizations which keeps them up to date with any relevant news. Alex has worked in banking for over 10 years with a wide range of experience across various parts of the industry.

Jess’s career has been diverse and impactful. She began as a professional actor and founded Calgary’s first award-winning feminist theatre company. She has also led a 2SLGBTQAI+ film festival, managed engagement on multi-billion-dollar projects, and worked as a leadership development specialist in healthcare. In the private sector, she has excelled as a facilitator, coach, and program designer. With over 15 years of experience, Jess specializes in facilitating conversations, coaching teams, and developing leadership skills. She has delivered hundreds of training programs on emotional intelligence, resilience, conflict resolution, accountability, trust-building, and change management. As a Certified Coach for over 12 years, Jess is an International Coaching Federation Mentor Coach and has partnered with leaders across industries including oil and gas, legal, financial, retail, telecommunications, and Healthcare.

Ameera Ladak (they/them) is the Vice-Chair of Alberta’s 2SLGBTQI+ Chamber of Commerce. Ameera is a gender non-conforming advocate for Queer and trans inclusion based in Calgary, AB, on Treaty 7 territory. They bring a wealth of experience to our Chamber, currently serving as a Senior Product Operations Manager at Shopify and a Freelance Writer with a focus on mental health, business, and tech. Ameera has been an active contributor to numerous LGBTQ+ initiatives and events through organizations such as Gradient Spaces, Venture Out, Start Proud, and hErVOLUTION.
In addition, Ameera is an active mental health advocate, having published over 60 stories for The Mighty, a health publication that has reached millions of readers and garnered over 100,000 interactions. They served as an Equity Consultant and Founding Board Member on the Mood Disorders Society of Canada’s National Youth Advisory Committee, and as a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Educator and Facilitator with the Ismaili Council for Canada.
Matt is a seasoned leader with over 15 years of experience in scaling businesses and building high-impact teams. He’s launched and grown two companies from $0 to 7-figure revenue, and successfully re-positioned an AI and services firm for an 8-figure exit. As VP Revenue at urllo he is responsible for driving top-line ARR growth across marketing, sales and customer success teams.
Prior to his current role, Matt spent six years as an independent, fractional CMO for scaling businesses. Before that he held a series of progressive roles at a global agency, working on a diverse range of clients including Shell Canada, Canadian Pacific Railway (now CPKC), KPMG, and BlackBerry (remember BlackBerry?).
Co-Founder & CEO of Tacit Edge Product Leadership as well as The International Product Foundation (IPF), where she blends her industry expertise to fuel our economy with empowered, innovative and diverse product leaders that embody the entrepreneurial spirit. Her love of Product Management stemmed from a unique perspective on problem/solution-based innovating, a deep curiosity for the world and a fundamental drive to make it better.
She is co-author of the global award-winning Product Management curriculum, the only gender and race Diversity, Equity and Inclusion-based (DEI) Product Management education/training program in the world.
Christa is also a director of Innovation for WTAL Canada which is a not-for-profit that focuses on influencing policy to drive equitable opportunity for prosperity of women in Canada and is a proud member of the 2SLGBTQI+ community.
In this session, you’ll hear directly from 2SLGBTQI+ entrepreneurs and professionals in the business community as they discuss how they run their businesses, the services they offer, and the strategies they’ve used to navigate entrepreneurial challenges. Panelists will share their experiences in building authentic brands, adapting to ever-changing consumer needs and interests, and forming valuable partnerships. The session will also provide insight into the importance of mentorship, community-building, and staying true to core values while scaling a business.
Idara (ee-dah-rah) is a people developer and project manager who resides in Edmonton. With 6+ years experience working with nonprofit organizations, she has gathered extensive understanding of the non profit sector in Alberta. Idara has also worked in post secondary institutions, with a goal to facilitate acclimatization of international students in Canada and to promote equality and diversity initiatives within tertiary institutions. Over the past few years Idara has honed her passion for community advocacy through running several community initiatives and offering educational sessions to organizations who wish to foster an inclusive workplace.
Idara’s interests include planning outfits and spaces, and connecting with friends and community. She is a huge fan of paint nights, clothing swaps and trips to the mountains.
Dr. Chúk Odenigbo (PhD) supports community development with the Comité FrancoQueer de l’Ouest. Proudly Franco-Albertan, Chúk is passionate about the ways the environment can have an impact on health and justice in our society. Chúk is very active in this space both in Canada, and internationally. His training includes environment, chemistry, public health, and medical geography. In his career he has focused on environmental and climate justice, and he is involved with numerous committees, boards, conferences, and movements to reimage and recreate our systems for the betterment of all beings, human, and nonhuman.
Little Star Artistry was created to foster connection and understanding between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities by decolonizing fashion and creating art that inspires dialogue and reflection. Dorienne is a proud Anishinaabe-Cree Metis woman, and is a proud member of the Metis Nation of Alberta.
Philip Lowrie is a management consultant at Accenture, specializing in capital projects, strategy, and technology. With a background in engineering, he previously led an engineering department that focused on energy transition initiatives.
Philip is also the former Chair of the Alberta 2SLGBTQI+ Chamber of Commerce and a former member of the Calgary Police Gender and Sexual Diversity Advisory Committee. He holds an MBA from the University of Calgary and actively mentors a variety of queer owned businesses across Canada, having supported over two dozen individuals in their career growth. Philip is a passionate advocate for the queer community in Calgary and enjoys coaching underrepresented groups nationwide.
While working with mentees, Philip often emphasizes the power of storytelling to help business owners connect their “why” to their customers. He believes that stories are a powerful tool for queer businesses to engage, connect, inspire, and differentiate themselves from others and creates an emotional connection that keeps your customers wanting more.
J Stevens is a Canadian creator, director and cinematographer. While J’s work has spanned many genres, formats, and job descriptions what has remained consistent is the commitment to bringing dynamic, personal, boundary-pushing, and visually captivating LGBTQ2S+ content to audiences- including directing on the Peabody award winning series Sort Of and the flagship Tubi series, The Z-Suite.
The session will begin with an opening discussion on the transformative potential of partnerships to foster resilience, growth, and community within the queer business ecosystem. Following this, participants will delve into four scenarios where partnerships are contextualized as practical solutions to entrepreneurial challenges.
Nicholas Rheubottom, the Executive Director of the Alberta LGBTQ+ Chamber of Commerce, leverages his extensive background to foster economic empowerment and inclusion within the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. In his role at the Chamber, Nicholas is dedicated to creating a supportive ecosystem for 2SLGBTQIA+ entrepreneurs, facilitating networking opportunities, providing resources and mentorship, and championing policies that promote equality and diversity in the business world. Under his operational leadership and through strong support from an exceptional board, Nicholas is committed to growing the Chamber in both influence and reach, making it a pivotal institution in advocating for the rights and success of 2SLGBTQIA+ business owners across Alberta.
His commitment to social justice and economic development is evident in his proactive approach to addressing the unique challenges faced by 2SLGBTQIA+ entrepreneurs, ensuring they have the tools and support needed to thrive in a competitive market. Nicholas also runs 4Sight, a strategic planning advisory firm. This entrepreneurial experience makes him better equipped to represent the interests of entrepreneurs. His vision and leadership are instrumental in driving forward initiatives that not only support individual businesses but also contribute to the broader goal of economic inclusion and community resilience.
Jarom Moriyama-Bondar (He/Him), is an Area Vice President for Gallagher Benefit Services. He has been consulting in the Group Benefits & Retirement industry for over 12 years.
Jarom consults hundreds of clients of all sizes on how to get the best return on their investment into employee benefits and retirement programs. He consults from an inclusive lens, ensuring that his clients get the most value from their programs, in terms of attraction/retention through employee engagement, perception, employee health, and productivity. Resulting in higher employee/customer attraction and retention. He has even built industry leading progressive programs within the industry and is a big believer that one person can make big change in any role.
Jarom is heavily involved in local community organizations and co-founded “Pride In Business” in 2011, an organization supporting 2SLGBTQ+ professionals, businesses, and allies through engaging events, networking, and social media content. His role is sponsor and membership. Connecting people is his strength.
In his spare time, he loves to travel, play sports, and spend time with his husband, 7 year old son, and friends.
Through their story of recovering from trauma, coming out as queer & non-binary and founding Frankie D’s Donuts, Mak reveals how creativity and innovation extend beyond business, shaping our identities, lives, and sense of purpose. During this keynote, Makaylah will also invite participants to reimagine what true inclusivity and connection look like in action. We will explore barriers that keep our work fragmented, even within marginalized spaces. Participants will explore the nuances of intersectionality, privilege within marginalization, and the gaps in inclusivity that often go unnoticed. Together, we’ll ask tough but necessary questions: “Where are we excelling in fostering inclusion, and where are we falling short?” and “How can empathy-based leadership transform our actions and bridge divides?”
Makaylah Rogers is an award-winning social impact entrepreneur of 12 years, and passionate Keynote Speaker. As a non-binary, neurodivergent, trauma survivor, Makaylah is passionate about de-stigmatizing mental health and inspiring empathy-driven action to become more inclusive as a society and in our businesses. Makaylah is the co-founder of Frankie D’s Donuts, a social enterprise that advocates for mental health and won the 2024 Canadian Chamber of Commerce Inclusive Growth Award, 2023 YWCA Banff Change Maker Award for Innovation, 2023 Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Bow Valley Business Excellence Award” and more. Makaylah is also the co-owner of Scale Naturally, a consulting and training company with a mission to create inclusive workplaces of the future.
